How can we move from authoritarian to participative management by "seizing the opportunity of an institutional crisis"?

How can we move from authoritarian to participative management by "seizing the opportunity of an institutional crisis"?

Sharing an inspirational leader.

This Monday, November 4, 2024, we were lucky enough to have Alexandra Gary, Sector Manager at the Delafontaine Foundation, as a special guest at our Actitudes® MeetUp.

Alexandra told us about the culture change underway at her institution, and how the 18 drivers approach to sustainable teams has helped, among other things:

  • Begin the transformation towards a more participative organizational culture, where every employee is given the space to express themselves and get involved, not only in their core business, but also in organizational and HR processes.

  • A common foundation for a transformation towards a more participative HR policy.

  • A common language for all, used during conferences and exchanges at all levels of the organization.

His genuine sharing is full of nuggets, and here's an extract:

  • A change in management towards a more participative approach is not necessarily welcomed with open arms; it can be greeted with resistance, confrontation, negativity, and a spillover from the past. And it implies a posture on the part of management that requires a great deal of courage, presence, authenticity and also time. On this subject, Frederic Meuwly quotes Brené Brown and his famous "courage of vulnerability", which applies perfectly to your posture and your authenticity Alexandra.

  • Such a change in culture is like a change in terrain: it takes time, and it happens gradually. Each individual becomes progressively more responsible (vs. management imposing all decisions).

  • It takes time and regular training to create new habits, such as feedback, in an organization and turn them into ingrained institutional habits.

  • Also worth noting is the interdependence of 18 drivers and how when you "move" one factor, one dimension, it has an impact on the rest of the system, like a cog in a wheel.

A big thank you to Alexandra Gary and the group for this wonderful exchange.
