The Ecocycle of sustainable teams: Joining an evolutionary dynamic

The Ecocycle of sustainable teams: Joining an evolutionary dynamic

If the team is a living system, then its evolution follows natural cycles of development and renewal, with phases of gestation, birth, maturity and creative transformation. This is the model that the "ecocycle", inspired by the Liberating Structures (ref.)invites us to explore it.

This model is a powerful powerful visual canvas to stimulate reflection on the evolutionary dynamics of a system, whether large or small. It offers great flexibility of analysis. You can choose to place it at the level of the organization as a whole, to focus on a specific team, or even to apply it to just one of the 18 factors and reflect on the practices linked to it. Similarly, you can position yourself as a person or leader at the center of the "ecocycle" and use it as a mirror to assess the evolution of your own skills and interactions, making this model a valuable support for reflection and personal development.

The "ecocycle" takes up the natural cycle found in all all components in nature and structure by four main phases phases:

  • maturity (Continue) corresponds to processes and activities that are going well(just like a tree whosefruit nourishes theenvironment);
  • creative transformation : (Stop) This phase of composting or destruction frees up resources for new initiatives;
  • gestation : (Ideas / Pending launch) refers to the "idea box" of potential future projects, waiting to be launched and injected with resources;
  • birth : (Begin) refers to the underlying dynamics to new projects or activities, requiring energy and attention to find their cruising speed.

The model also includes two types of "trap":

  • the poverty trap lies between gestation and birth. It concerns valuable elements that are under-invested for lack of resources or support ;
  • the trap of rigidity lies between maturity and creative transformation. It contains obsolete activities or processes that needlessly consume time, energy and resources.

We would be delighted to accompany you on an in-depth exploration the powerful tool of the "ecocycle the "ecocycle" and practical concrete exercises with your team. Contact us to discuss and co-develop a seminar tailored to your needs.

If you'd like to learn more about our approach to change management and facilitation, we invite you to join us at one of our upcoming Train-the-Trainer certification courses.

At our 2025 Actitudes MeetUp, we were able to Experience this Ecocycle in real life (and in the wild), with the group present. Let's share a few images:
