How to transition from authoritarian management to participatory management by « seizing the opportunity of an institutional crisis » ?

How to transition from authoritarian management to participatory management by « seizing the opportunity of an institutional crisis » ?

Sharing from an inspiring leader.

This Monday, November 4, 2024, we had the chance to have Alexandra Gary, Sector Manager at the Delafontaine Foundation, as a special guest during our MeetUp Actitudes®.

Alexandra told us about the ongoing culture change within her institution and how the approach of the 18 key factors for sustainable teams has notably allowed:

  • To initiate the transformation towards a more participatory organizational culture, where each employee is given the space to express themselves and get involved, not only in their core business, but also in organizational and HR processes.

  • A common foundation for a transformation towards a more participatory HR policy.

  • A common language for everyone, used during conferences and exchanges at all levels of the organization.

Her authentic sharing was full of gems, and here is an excerpt:

  • A shift in management towards more participation is not necessarily welcomed with open arms; it can be met with resistance, confrontations, negativity, and spillover due to the past. And it implies a stance from management that requires a lot of courage, presence, authenticity, and also time. On this subject, Frederic Meuwly cites Brené Brown and her famous “courage of vulnerability,” which perfectly applies to your stance and authenticity, Alexandra.

  • Such a culture change is like a change of terrain: it takes time and happens progressively. Each individual gradually becomes more responsible (vs. a management that imposes all decisions).

  • It takes time and regular practice to create new habits, such as feedback, within an organization and to make them ingrained institutional habits.

  • Also noteworthy is the interdependence of the 18 key factors and how when one “moves” a factor, a dimension, it has an impact on the rest of the system, like in a gear.

A big thank you to Alexandra Gary and the group present for this great exchange.
